A group of friends and I are spending the weekend in Begur. We went to a local nightclub tonight and one of my friends, who is Indian, was the target of racist comments when he mentioned where he was from. Other people in the club were aggressive in general (pushing, invading personal space to a very weird extent, etc.) but the racism toward my friend stood out.

I’ve traveled and lived a lot and I’m honestly surprised in the worst way possible . I expected the Costa Brava in 2026 to be a bit more cosmopolitan, especially in a place that lives off international tourism. Is this typical of smaller Catalan provincial towns? Was this just a bad nightclub, or is this representative of something broader?

I grew up in a similar provincial environment in Latin America, and ironically I never witnessed racism this open and cruel back home. I expected better from a European tourist town in 2026.

Mostly I feel for my friend, who has been trying to enjoy the trip and now has this on top of it
