What does it mean when a wedding invite says ‘wear what makes you comfortable’?
My German wife and I have lived in the States for forty plus years. My in-laws are fantastic, I couldn’t ask for a better family. We visit almost every year so we are very comfortable there. My niece is getting married. The invitation has baffled me a bit. If my niece here in the U.S. got married I would wear a suit. No questions. I would be physically comfortable in a T-Shirt and shorts, but I feel like that would be disrespectful although she probably wouldn’t care. So, would I be fine in a pair of Dockers and a button up shirt, and no tie? We don’t want to stand out in any way, we want it to be her special day. We know clothing styles are different there so please consider that as well…I’m probably overthinking this. If it makes a difference they are in Bavaria near Schweinfurt.
EDIT: You people are amazing. Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses. The most common response? Just ask her. Well we did ask her father and he said I’m wearing a suit but I’m her father! And to everyone else he said " I don’t know ” we felt awkward asking the bride because we think she would say that it means what it says. We will be fine and I can’t wait to be in your beautiful country again. My second home. Thank you all.
