Deer ravaged laurels

Hi everyone

Deer ravaged this section of laurels over winter. The laurels are south west facing but shaded a little by very large trees. Receive quite a bit of light throughout the day though id say over 6. They sit near my garage in a somewhat sheltered position. Winter this year got to round minus 22 degrees C.

I had mulched them properly but how do I ensure this recovers properly in the section that was eaten?

Ive taken some hand pruners and trimmed off the top and then given it some fertiliser. Watering somewhat regularly when its needed , they were planted 2 years ago.

A thought had crossed my mind whether or not to chop more but then Id worry itd be too savage.

What do you guys think? Any suggestions welcome!
