Hear me out: was Aaliyah’s story intentionally left unresolved?
I’ve seen a lot of people say “Aaliyah is dead” or “move on,” and I’m not even arguing that she’s definitely coming back. I actually think the bigger question is why the show never gave us any resolution to her story at all.
The S1 mission was ultimately to get to Asmar Ali Amrohi, but Cruz’s actual infiltration was through Aaliyah. Their relationship became the emotional centre of the season, and Cruz genuinely fell in love with her.
There are so many things left unanswered.
Cruz tells her to cancel the wedding, and they see what happens (between them)
Aaliyah then explicitly tells Cruz she doesn’t want to marry Ehsan, and when Cruz tells her to tell him, Aaliyah basically says she already did and her wants don’t matter.
Then Amrohi is killed, Cruz disappears, and we’re left with that final shot of Aaliyah sitting on the stairs completely devastated.
We never find out:
what happened to Aaliyah after that?
whether she discovered who Zara really was
whether anyone found Ehsan’s computer containing Cruz’s information
And that’s what bothers me.
I’m not saying Aaliyah has to become a recurring character, or even that Stephanie Nur is definitely returning. I just think the show created a major character with a huge emotional storyline and then essentially dropped her at the exact moment her story became interesting.
Even if they brought her back for one episode purely to give her closure, I’d be happy.
Also, during the girls’ night, they specifically watch The Notebook, including the scene with Allie and Noah together. Given that Cruz/Aaliyah’s relationship is also about two people falling in love and then being separated by circumstances, I’ve always wondered whether that was intended as a thematic parallel.
Maybe I’m reading way too much into it 😂 but I genuinely think there’s enough unresolved material here that it’s worth discussing.
