Daughter is struggling academically and don’t know where to go next
My daughter (1st grade, 7) has had a rough year academically and I feel like I’m doing everything I can but would love some insight on where to go next. Sorry if this is long
Kindergarten was mostly fine but this year has been hard from the start her DIBELs reading scores dropped like a rock and do not pick up despite reading intervention 5x a week. Spelling tests start and no matter how much I help her at home she forgets the concepts she learned immediately. If I practice with her 30 min+ 5-7 days a week sometimes she does a little better…but with b and d reversals she ends up flunking anyways. Sometimes I think reading is fine and other times it feels extremely difficult for her. Reading comprehension is excellent. Math is also very difficult and she will forget the concepts for that too.
I have done neuropsych that gave her a dx of ADHD inattentive and a learning disability in reading. Got her vision tested and she got a tiny prescription for reading glasses. Hearing is fine. I went to the school with my findings and they brushed them off and did their own testing. Their testing found some gaps in fluency in reading, math and working memory but everything else was normal. Her IQ is a few points from gifted but learning anything with her feels extremely difficult.
The school offered us no extra help minus the reading and math intervention but no specialized instruction and no special ed classes. Her doctor does not want her medicated for ADHD due to her small size. I have her in weekly OT and an Orton gillingham tutor 1x a week on top of the 30/min a day she gets at school. I don’t know if anything is helping. I try to get her to read but it’s really reading, spelling or math nightly there is not enough time for all of it with homework and extracurriculars.
I’m just at a loss to what else she should be doing. We are not on the iPad at all really. Her teacher is concerned but has offered me nothing to help her as well. I feel like we are cooked for next year and I don’t know how to move forward here.
