**Laid off on OPT, EAD expires in ~1 month — STEM OPT extension already in progress. Need clarity on grace period.**

Graduated May 2025, on OPT since June 2025. H-1B was lottery-selected for October 2026 but I'm dropping that route.

Got notified of layoff but am officially employed until May 31. EAD expires around the same time. I've already submitted a signed I-983 and am waiting on my I-20 to file the STEM OPT extension (with premium processing) before May 31.

**Questions:**

  1. Does the 60-day grace period start from when I was notified, or my actual last day of employment (May 31)?
  2. Since I'm filing the STEM OPT extension before my EAD expires, am I covered by the 180-day automatic extension while it's pending?
