What are these formations?

Location: Sante Fe river, North Florida.

Found in soft sand in the middle of a river with mainly sandstone rock beds.

Our rivers are low so lots of old sand bars are exposed. While sifting through one of these in the middle of the river I came across these formations/concretions and I'm curious as to what they are or how they are formed.

At first I thought of fossilized coral or sea sponge but it seems less and less likely.
