Did You Know The Guy Who Bought Google.com for $12 (And What Google Did Next)
In 2015, a former employee accidentally bought "Google.com" for $12 on Google's own domain service—and owned the most visited website on Earth for 1 minute.
In late 2015, Sanmay Ved was browsing Google Domains late at night and noticed something impossible: Google was listed as available for purchase. He clicked add-to-cart, paid $12 with his credit card, and the transaction went through. For about 60 seconds, his search console dashboard was inundated with internal Google administrative notifications and webmaster controls. Google’s security team realized what happened and promptly cancelled the transaction. Instead of punishing him, Google rewarded him with a bounty of $6,006.13 (numerical code for "G-O-O-G-L-E"). When Sanmay told them he was donating the entire reward to charity, Google doubled the payout to over $12,000.
