Guindy park - visitors mistreating animals
Visited Guindy children’s park yesterday and feel they can do so much better in terms of the living conditions for the animals. I got out of the place feeling low and would not want to visit again.
There were a bunch of kids who were taunting the ostriches, and poking them with sticks and the worst part was that the adults with them were looking on smiling. We intervened and then they stopped. The ostriches were visibly distraught and jumping onto the fence (as if to attack). There were also fully grown men throwing twigs at monkeys. This was just two cases within an hour. So imagine what these animals are subject to on a daily basis.
The enclosures for the animals seem too small for their sizes. While the concept of zoos itself is debatable, the least the authorities can do is provide safe living conditions for these animals. There is so much scope and space to improve their enclosures. They did a revamp of the park a year ago. This has made the walking areas for visitors much better. But the animals still feel confined in areas that seem too restricted for animals of their size.
There aren’t enough staff to make sure these animals are safe and not being abused.
The park sees quite a crowd, especially with the summer vacations in full swing. But fail to understand why it’s not equipped enough to manage the crowd interactions.
