Fantasy YA book from my childhood
Hi everyone I just wanted some help with finding this specific book series. I remember that the Main Character was brought to a magic school, his roommate was some type of magic genius, he got a magic pet, and then he had to run away from school because the Evil guy got ahold of this like magic book? That rewrote history and made it to the evil guy was in power.
His roommate refused to go with him so he ran away and i think eventually he hid with the family and taught them how to read and write (which was illegal bc of the bad guy) and then one of the bad guys' subordinates found out and told him he had to fight in an arena or he would kill the family, and the Main Character agreed. He kept winning fights and then the last fight was against the champion of the Arena and he won and took of the helmet and it was his clone. It turned out that the subordinate took his blood earlier in the series and made a clone.
That's all I remember sadly but I remember loving this story, any help is welcome thank you!
