How to tell if they are just being polite vs the interview actually being successful?

Had a job interview this morning and I left thinking it went well but now I’m over analyzing and second guessing that maybe they were just being polite.

Throughout the interview, I couldn’t tell which way it was going, I was feeling 50/50. Nothing was necessarily bad but also nothing was saying good. Halfway through, my daughter ignored my instructions to stay away and tried to sneak past but they totally saw her on camera 😭 no one acknowledged it but I know they saw her and at that point I was thinking I’m doomed.

One of the recruiters had mentioned my degree and that I was overqualified so she questioned whether a different position would be better for me (it’s just an admin role) and asked why I’m applying. When I said my response, she was tearing up and drying her eyes with a tissue. The other guy was laughing and she said it was like music to her ears. We ended it on a high note with us all laughing but now I’m anxiously thinking they were just being polite as my answers weren’t the greatest.

How long should I wait til I send a follow up email? They initially said they were interviewing tomorrow so the candidates moving to the next stage would be contacted in a couple weeks but then after we were laughing, they suggested sending an email to HR to provide references for stage 2. I don’t wanna miss my mark but also don’t wanna be too keen
