Anyone who kinda feels for Patrick Bateman?
To preface i am acutely aware of the fact he is a reprehensible and frankly horrid person rather than a misunderstood sigma.
He squanders his life seeking recognition and validation or just desperately attempting to fit in. Dorsia , the Fisher account, a nicer apartment that happens to overlook a slightly better area, pop albums , all to simply craft a veneer of affluence over other yuppies.
He catalogues music, purchases tailored suit not out of a personal desire , but to simply relay his superiority.
In a way i think he is more like a conjunction of labels,brands, and contemporary societal ideals all encapsulated into one man.
His relationships are as vapid/shallow as his lifestyle, his friends or associates mutually harbors essentially little to no regard for him, constantly mistaking him for someone else due to how interchangeable they all are.
If my recollections are correct then i think a passage (him peering into a minor fracture inside of a bathroom and remarking how he could disappear and nobody would notice)within the novel exemplifies this.
Amidst a world brimming with life he is still destitute of any genuine company. Unlike other character who has a defined goalpost that would eventually satiate them , Patrick has none, no one really loves him, he has no backstory, just excess and superfluous consumerism that will ultimately never fulfill him.
In the end he suffers no repercussions from his actions because he is invisible.
