What do y'all think about Laredo allowing data centers to be built here?

WHAT DO YOU THINK? SOUND OFF BELOW!

As artificial intelligence infrastructure expands across Texas, Laredo may soon become part of the next wave of large-scale data center development. Industry reports have linked the area to proposed projects requiring massive amounts of land and energy, while experts nationwide continue raising concerns about strain on electrical grids and water resources. Laredo is already experiencing rapid industrial growth, increased truck traffic, and infrastructure concerns, which raises an important question for residents: do you think projects like these will genuinely help the city long term, or are we sacrificing too much without enough public discussion?

Is the north pretty much laredos cancer valley?

Not saying Laredo is “Cancer Alley,” but I don’t get why we don’t talk more about pollution here.

We’re one of the busiest inland ports in the country. Trucks everywhere, warehouses popping up nonstop, and industrial areas growing fast especially in north/northwest Laredo.

Then I started reading about ethylene oxide and the Midwest Sterilization plant. The EPA classifies EtO as cancer causing with long term exposure. ProPublica and the Texas Tribune also reported elevated estimated cancer risks near parts of Laredo tied to industrial emissions.

I’m not anti business. I know trade keeps this city running. But are we not allowed to ask questions about what breathing all this for decades might do to people living nearby? Feels like anytime someone brings this up, people instantly act like you’re attacking jobs instead of asking for transparency and accountability.

Why Does the South Side of Laredo Get Ignored?

I’ve lived on the south side of Laredo my whole life, and I genuinely don’t understand why all the new development always goes to the north side. Every time there’s a new restaurant, shopping center, coffee shop, or major construction project… it’s north Laredo again.

Meanwhile the south side keeps getting overlooked. We don’t even have basic stuff people on the north side take for granted like a Chick-fil-A or Starbucks nearby. A lot of areas still look the same they did 15–20 years ago aside from a few schools and small businesses.

Why is that? Is it politics? Income demographics? Investors not caring? The city not prioritizing us?

I’m not even trying to complain just to complain I genuinely want to understand why one side of the city keeps growing while the other feels stuck in time. Because sometimes it feels like if you live in south Laredo, you’re just expected to drive across town for everything remotely nice.

Can someone explain Laredo politics to me?

I’ve lived in Laredo my whole life, and honestly, I still don’t fully understand our local politics. Everything looks almost exactly the same as it did when I was little, aside from a few new schools, restaurants, and random developments here and there.

So what are these elected officials actually doing?

Why does Henry Cuellar have such a strong grip on this area? Why do the same people stay in positions of power for decades? And why isn’t there more transparency or some kind of real audit showing what they’ve actually done to improve Laredo?

Maybe I’m just not in the tax bracket that benefits from the decisions being made, but from where I’m standing, Laredo still looks neglected. The roads, infrastructure, public spaces, and overall quality of life do not reflect decades of leadership.

At some point, we have to ask: who is actually benefiting from the way things are run here?
