Should we be concerned (sweet gum)

Our seemingly healthy sweet gum dropped a rather large branch out of nowhere. There was no wind or other bad weather other than being hot and humid. There is a hole at its base about 12" deep. Is this anything to be worried about? Located in central Illinois. Thanks!
