To repair or not to repair?
Hi everybody, I'm not exactly a "car person" so thanks in advance for helping me think through the below!
I have a 2013 GX460 with approximately 196K on it. It the premium model, I believe, in pretty good condition with the exception of the Active Heigh Control doesn't work ( I've never used it) and a couple cosmetic items (small dent above rear wheel well and driver/passenger seat starting to show some real wear). Tires need to be replaced soon. Has a tow package & roof racks. I was beginning to think about selling it when the check engine light went on. I've had the codes checked and cleared a few times now and it seems the transmission needs to be replaced (about $5500-$6000K all said and done) but oddly have had no trouble shifting thus far.... It has had regular and routine work done otherwise.
A couple things:
This transmission appears to be on a national backorder. The other option is to rebuild it, which is only a little less than buying a new transmission if they were available...There would be a $24K/2 year warranty on the rebuild.
Do I sell it now and take a hit on the price due to the work needing to be done, and let the buyer manage the logistics of that OR do I pay for the work myself and potentially net a little better on the sale? If the former, what seems like a fair price as-is given the condition description above? I'll obviously do my local research before listing it but would be helpful to get a ballpark from Lexus enthusiasts first:)
