Lore idea I had: Clan spirits/Clan-sonas!

Clan spirits are born from the camaraderie among a Clan. Their temperament is drawn from the personalities of the Clan's members; a list of temperaments can be found here, and an explanation of social/aggression/lawful/stability can be found here. Their strength is directly tied to both the collective strength of the Clan's members and the cohesion of the Clan. Even if everyone in the Clan is strong, the spirit will be weak if they don't work together. If the Clan dies out, the spirit will be severely weakened and start to fade. If the spirit dies as a result of poor Clan cohesion, the Clan's cats will feel disheartened and strike out on their own. I would love for you to show me your Clan's spirit and tell me about them!

The spirit shown above is the cunning and mercurial Blossoming Queen. She is the spirit of BloomClan, my current Clan. Her presence keeps BloomClan territory in a state of perpetual newleaf. She also affects the fertility of the Clan, raising the birth rate and average litter size.

(Sprite created using this tool. If you want permanent newleaf on your Clan, you'll need to download the dev version, create a new Clan in Cruel Season, and choose the Neverending Pollen card.)

What kind of cats do you consider pretty or ugly?

What colors, patterns, white patches, poses, etc do you tend to like or dislike? Personally, I like masked, marbled, bengal, sokoke, and rosette. I'm quite partial to ginger cats, torties, and calicos. I like all the poses for longhaired cats, especially adolescents. I like the SHIBAINU, ESTRELLA, and TEARS white patches. I don't really like ghost-colored cats. I'm also not a fan of the singlestripe, ticked, or agouti patterns. I don't like the "front-facing" pose for shorthaired adults or the "loaf" pose for elders.

What do y'all think of my evil LifeGen MC?

I'm doing an evil run. I built my MC to be the perfect murderer (bloodthirsty personality, fighting skill, clever skill). I'm holding off on murdering anyone till she's 12 moons old. So far, she's killed 2 unnamed StarClan spirits.

Getting seriously annoyed at all the murder in my Clan

A bit of context: I exile all murderers. When they die, I send them to the DF. Yellow circles indicate my MC's descendants; blue circles indicate his (former) mates.

Alternatives for the -star suffix for a leader who follows the Dark Forest?

Hello everyone! I'm thinking of doing an evil run with a leader MC and I need some ideas for what her suffix should be, since -star doesn't make sense for a cat who doesn't follow StarClan. I'd prefer a unique suffix; I don't want to use a standard one like -shadow, -murk, -dark, or -night.

Lifegen Murder Guide

So you want to do an evil run in Lifegen? You're in the right place! This comprehensive guide will cover how to build a murderer MC, murder strategies, detailed breakdowns of death/injury/discovery chances, how to cure injuries using save editing, and how to unshun your Lifegen MC if you get caught.

Murder Basics

To murder a cat, go to your MC's profile > Dangerous > Murder. Choose your victim, the method you'll use to kill them (attack, poison, accident, predator), the location where you'll do it (camp, territory, border), and the time of day you'll do it (day, dawn, night). Each of these has its pros and cons, which I will cover in the next sections. If so desired, you can ask a cat to be your accomplice. If they accept, they may get killed, injured, or shunned in your place. However, they may refuse to be your accomplice, report you, and have you shunned.

Murder Tips

No matter what strategy you decide on, here are some tips that may be of use:

  • Always have an accomplice, but make sure their willingness is "high" or "very high."
  • Don't kill anyone until you're at least 12 moons old; if you get shunned as a kit, you will continue to be shunned during your apprenticeship. Shunned apps are unable to train.
  • Don't try to kill anyone if you're currently sick or injured.
  • Joining the DF decreases your chances of getting hurt while attempting murder. Go to your MC's profile > Dangerous and click Join Dark Forest.
  • To gain experience, your MC can patrol multiple times per moon. After going on patrol, save, close, and reopen the game. You will be able to patrol again!
  • I don't recommend choosing the predator method; while it's the least suspicious, it's also the most likely to get you killed or injured.

Character Builds/Strategies

If you don't mind taking risks, choose the "impulsive" trait and the "avid play-fighter" skill during character creation. When you become an app, choose a mentor with the clever or hunting skill. Join the DF. Attack your victims or set up accidents at the border at night.

If you prefer to play it safe, choose the "quick-witted" skill during character creation and become a medcat. Join the DF. Poison your victims in camp at dawn.

Death Chance

Death chance is the chance that your MC will die while attempting murder. It is not the chance that your victim will die. Base death chance is 0%.

  • Attack method: +5% death chance
  • Poison method: +1% death chance (unless you're a medcat or med app)
  • Accident method: +8% death chance
  • Predator method: +12% death chance
  • Camp location: +1% death chance
  • Territory location: +5% death chance
  • Border location: +10% death chance
  • Dawn time: +2% death chance
  • Daytime: +3% death chance
  • Nighttime: +10% death chance
  • If you have an accomplice: -4% death chance
  • If your victim is more than 12 moons old: +2% death chance
  • If your victim is younger than 6 moons old OR you chose the poison method: halves death chance, rounded down

Discovery Chance

Discovery chance is the chance that your MC will get caught. Base discovery chance is 5%.

  • Camp location: +8% discovery chance
  • Territory location: -5% discovery chance
  • Border location: -20% discovery chance
  • If the Clan is at war: Additional -20% discovery chance when murdering at the border
  • If you have an accomplice: Halves discovery chance

Methods have different effects on discovery chance depending on the location and time. Consult the tables below to see how they intersect.

Method In camp In the territory At the border
Attack +8% +8% -15%
Poison ±0% if you're a medcat, +15% otherwise +15% if you're a medcat, +20% otherwise +20%, regardless of whether you're a medcat
Accident +20% -5% -20%
Predator +20% -20% -25%
Method At dawn During the day At night
Attack +20% +30% +15%
Poison ±0% +20% if you're a medcat, ±0% otherwise ±0%
Accident +15% +8% ±0%
Predator -15% +8% +8%

Unshunning Your MC + Forcing Injuries to Heal

So things didn't go according to plan and now your MC is facing the consequences of their actions. Not to worry! With the power of save editing, you can make them get away scot-free!

To access your Clan's files, save your game, go to Main Menu > Settings + Info > Open Data Directory.

To unshun your MC, open the data directory and open clan_cats.json using your system's text editor. For Windows, this will likely be Notepad. For Mac, this will be TextEdit. Use Ctrl+F (Cmd+F for Mac) to search for your MC's prefix. Once you find your MC, scroll down until you see a variable called "shunned." Change it to 0.

To force-heal your MC, search for your MC in clan_cats.json. There should be a variable at the top of their information called "ID". Keep their ID number in mind. Close clan_cats.json and open the conditions folder. Look for the json file named after your MC's ID and delete it. Warning: This will also abort pregnancies and cure permanent conditions.

Risk Chance

Warning: There's a lot of stuff that goes into calculating risk chance, so this section is pretty lengthy. You might just want to skim it.

Risk chance is the chance that your MC or their accomplice will get hurt while attempting murder. This is not your chance of getting found out. Lower numbers are better. Risk chance starts at 0% before all the factors are taken into consideration. After calculations, it cannot be lower than 5% or higher than 95%.

Possible injuries for each method:

  • Attack: claw-wound, bite-wound, torn pelt, sprain, sore, bruises, scrapes
  • Poison: poisoned
  • Accident: broken bone (this one is the most likely), sprain, sore, bruises, scrapes, paralysis, head damage, broken jaw
  • Predator: bite-wound, broken bone, torn pelt, mangled leg, mangled tail

Factors that affect risk chance:

  • If you train in the DF: -32% risk chance
  • If you're older than your victim: -16% risk chance
  • If your victim is at least 120 moons old: -16% risk chance
  • If you're the same rank as your victim: -16% risk chance
  • If you have more experience than your victim: -16% risk chance
  • If you have an accomplice: -24% risk chance
  • Camp location: -24% risk chance
  • Daytime: -24% risk chance
  • Border location: +22% risk chance
  • Nighttime: +30% risk chance
  • If your victim trains in the DF: +32% risk chance
  • If your victim is at least 4 moons older than you: +16% risk chance
  • If your victim is the leader: +16% risk chance if they only have one life left, +40% otherwise
  • If your victim has more experience than you: +16% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND train in the DF: -35% risk chance
  • Attack method AND border location: -8% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND are a warrior AND are not sick/injured: -24% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND are older than your victim: -16% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND have the "bloodthirsty" trait: -16% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND your victim is a warrior AND they are not sick/injured: +15% risk chance
  • Attack method AND camp location: +8% risk chance
  • If you chose the attack method AND your victim has the "bloodthirsty" trait: +16% risk chance
  • Accident method AND camp location: -15% risk chance
  • If you chose the accident method AND your Clan is in the mountains: +10% risk chance
  • Predator method AND camp location: -35% risk chance
  • If you chose the predator method AND your victim is not a kit, app, or elder: +10% risk chance
  • If you chose the predator method AND are a kit, app, or elder: +15% risk chance

Additionally, there are many skills that affect risk chances:

What kind of personality would you have if you were a cat in ClanGen?

Cats' personalities are determined by four facets: lawfulness, sociability, aggression, and stability. Each facet ranges from 0 to 16. I decided to make a personality test using the facet system and what the devs have written in the trait dictionary.

For the purposes of this test, 0 means you completely agree with the "low" statement for that facet, 16 means you completely agree with the "high" one, and 8 means you're split 50/50. Any other number means you're somewhere in between. Comment your facets and I'll tell you what your personality would be!

Lawfulness

Low: “I put little stock in rules, both my internal rules and the rules of those around me. I am quick to shrug off possible consequences.”

High: “I am strict in how I interface with the society I live within. I put a lot of stock in a moral code, though that code may be personal and private or society-wide and well-known.”

Sociability

Low: “I struggle to navigate the social web around me and may struggle to understand what makes others tick.”

High: “I’m savvy in conversation and have a great understanding of how other cats think and behave.”

Aggression

Low: “I am slow to confront both other cats and my own beliefs. I might act cautiously and may struggle to assert myself.”

High: “I assert myself in all I do, making my opinions clear and rarely waiting to consider what other cats want.”

Stability

Low: “I am quick to change my opinions and make decisions. I don’t spend much time considering the consequences of what I do.”

High: “I am slow to change my opinions and make decisions. I’m consistent and grounded."

Comment your facets and I'll tell you what your personality would be!

[Lifegen] Apparently cats can become mates with DF cats and have kits with them

I found these while looking at Lifegen's source code. (Achievements source, backstories source) However, in my own game, I'm not able to make living cats take dead ones as mates without save editing. Dead cats also can't have conditions (unless they had a permanent condition when they died), so I don't think pregnancy would work.

I have so many questions. Would DFborn kits would age in the DF or stay kits until they entered the world of the living. If the former, would that make them alive? If so, where would their soul go when they died? Would they even have a soul?

I kinda wonder if this is something the devs are working on implementing or something that has been scrapped/shelved. I would love to hear from a dev about this.

Here's a list of all the weird/funny names that outsiders can generate with

Here's my source for this information.

Fun fact: "Poopy" (no, not "Poppy") used to be on this list. The devs removed it last month, stating that it "reaches into gross-out humor and doesn't set a good precedent for other outsider names potentially being 'gross.'" (source)

Kits (especially newborn kits) don't belong in the Dark Forest :(

While looking through LifeGen's source code, I found some sad stuff involving dead kits.
