Grafting plants of different sex together to produce fruit from one tree of a dioecious species
To put it simply I'm considering how to best grow Myrica Rubra, a dioecious tree (each individual is either male or female) to produce fruit in a very limited space. An idea that struck me is to graft a few branches from a male plant onto a female plant to enable polination and thus fruiting on a single tree, however I have not been able to find information on whether this would actually work.
As of now I just aquired the seeds so any grafting procedure is not going to take place soon, but it would be interesting to know if this approach is viable. Assuming the graft succeeds, would chemical signaling be compatible? Perhaps most importantly would both male and female branches flower at the same time?
What motivates me is in part curiosity, but also a wish to let my wife have one of her favorite fruits, that we have never seen for purchase locally, in a climate that necessitates growing this tree indoors. In the coming few years it will likely have to live on a sealed balcony, but I hope it can eventually grow in a greenhouse in our future garden.
