5th year with a garden, feeling like we’re finding our groove 💚

My husband and I used to focus exclusively on growing veggies, but have mixed in lots of flowers which I’m loving! We had gotten started a little later this year meaning that some mystery-plants were already growing, and I’ve had a lot of fun looking into each of them and figuring out if we should keep them in or not (although I imagine someone might flag we’ve kept something we shouldn’t 😅). We also used to have standard straight rows, but I put down some impromptu curvy paths (free stones on Facebook marketplace, woohoo).

These changes have really helped it feel more alive and like a little sanctuary rather than produce-production lines. Love spending at least a bit of time back there each day (ideally a lot of time!)

Based in the North end of Toronto.

Missing our sweet girl

Just wanted to share our beautiful little girl Joe who we lost very suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday.

We noticed she was off about a week ago and took her to the vet and were sent home with meds and an optimistic prognosis. We gave this a few days but she seemed to get worse so we took her to the animal hospital and before we knew it she was getting a blood transfusion. Afterward they called us feeling optimistic again, then she had a seizure and they ran some tests and told us to come in right away… and by the time we got there she was struggling to breathe, and the vet advised us there was basically no chance that she would recover and continuing to treat her might cause unnecessary suffering, so we made the choice to euthanize her while holding her in our arms.

My husband found Joe 8 years ago before we met. She was a scrappy little alley cat, skinny and matted hair, that ran up to him meowing. He took her in and got her healthy, and we met 3 years later. Joe quickly became my best friend. She was so silly, vocal and affectionate and full of personality. She was always always with me (my husband called her my little shadow). At night she always slept with us and she’d even let me hold her like a teddy bear. We gave her so much love every day and she gave us so much love, joy and laughter.

I’ve never lost a pet before and she was so special and precious to us. We’re so devastated and miss our girl so so much. We know we gave her such a happy life but it’s hard not to feel like we failed her. I know so many have experienced this grief so… just wanted to share it with people who get it.
