Lego Batman legacy of the dark knight: minor inconveniences
So while I think this game gets so much right and I would give it like an 8.5/10 and maybe closer to a 9, there are a few things I think the game gets wrong.
The voice acting, Talia sounds French and Batman sounds the same at the start of the game and at the end, if this is a legacy game why when he should be in his 40-50s does he sound the same as he did in his 20s. And his voice is just odd. No offense to voice actor he’s very talented obviously to land such a high profile job and it’s not bad it’s just different. And I also understand there was a voice acting strike at the time of production so they get off on this.
Lack of progression. 100 costumes (a lot of duplicates), 23 red bricks, 30 vehicles. Not a lot over 40 hour game. And some of the costumes are just way too easy to unlock especially the 40 or so you get just for beating the story. I would have liked it if there were actual challenges to get the suits ( i.e 30 riddler puzzles unlocks the Adam west skin or something.) I just think it makes playing the game after the story all that more enjoyable, most people will not 100% this game because after you reach about 55-60% and have less than half the side quest done, it’s gonna be a long time before you unlock anymore suits. I don’t know if that makes sense, but this here is my biggest problem with the whole game there’s not enough content and it’s squeezed into the first 14 hours and for the other 26 you barely unlock anything. I guess the upgrades are cool but I’d rather have had that incorporated into the rewards for completing the story than the suits honestly.
The story. Absolutely AMAZING! But it is way too short. At the end of the game I wasn’t like oh what a nice ending i literally said, “that’s it!?”. And so many great villains only get just a few lines or a 3 second fight like the Arkham asylum mission. It’s kinda dumb. There was so much potential with these characters that didn’t even require them to be in the main story but instead they could’ve done proper side missions like in the Arkham games, would’ve been so cool. Also kinda tying into that, the story is just too rushed, I get TT didnt want the game to take so long to complete for “normal people” but I’d rather have a $100 great game with 60 hours+ of content that I can’t complete it all because I get burnt out then a $70 game I complete in 35 hours. Maybe that’s just me. Just so many aspects feel crammed together and important characters like robin get just a few story missions, slightly maddening.
The fighting difficulty, I get this is a Lego game, but even on the hardest difficulty this game is too easy. I’m not expecting full Arkham combat, but on, I am the knight, the combat should’ve at least been more challenging. I only died 2 times the entire story, on my very first try. Come on.
The use of fast travel feels lazy. One thing I liked about Lego Batman 2 is that it’s the only modern Batman game that had a fully immersive batcave. While it was small you still could walk, drive, fly, swim out of the batcave and it made it feel like you are Batman. I was hoping to at least be able to explore the outside of Wayne manor. But that is not the case.
Side missions: at times they get a bit repetitive clue master and the riddler have the exact same copy and paste mechanics for their missions.
Like I said I’m not knocking this game and I am more than happy with the product they gave us, but these are just a few things I think that would’ve made the game a 10/10.
