Why do detectives ask the suspect how long people who committed these crimes should be convicted?

In a lot of those bodycam videos on youtube during an interrogation if the suspect is trying to say they didn't do it a lot of the times the detective will ask something along the lines of, "if we find out who really did this how long do you think they should be sentenced for." And usually they say something like life in prison.

It comes up so often that it feels like this is something they are trained to do but I dont see what affect it would have. Does it have any?

Put no if you're not sure

I am asking because I recently found out that my grandma was born left handed but her dad made her use her right hand to write and still does.

Not gonna do this, I don't even know how you would do this, but basically if I were to somehow ensure the rabbit population was constantly increasing by feeding them as many carrots as they need and made it difficult for any predators to enter my property, and I had a large property and ended up with so many wild rabbits that it started becoming a nuisance and caused damage, would I find myself in legal trouble?

And if its not obvious this is hypothetical lol. I can see this maybe being against the law but I mostly doubt its ever been an issue anywhere. I dont know if its even possible
