Flying YVR → HKG → DAC in economy: how strict is carry-on weight at Vancouver?
I’m flying from Vancouver (YVR) to DAC via Hong Kong (HKG) in economy, and I’m trying to figure out how strict things are going to be at check-in in Vancouver.
My luggage situation:
- Checked bag: 23.2 kg
- Carry-on: ~10 kg
- Personal item (laptop bag): ~5 kg (laptop itself is ~3.5 kg)
So I’m slightly “loaded” on the cabin side, mainly because the laptop adds up fast.
My question is: how likely is it that they actually weigh the carry-on (or personal item) at YVR for this kind of long-haul international route?
I’ve heard mixed things:
- Some people say international flights rarely weigh carry-ons unless they look obviously huge
- Others say certain airlines (especially on Asia routes) can be pretty strict at the gate or check-in if it looks heavy
- And sometimes it just depends on the agent having a bad day
I’m mostly wondering what people’s real experience has been at YVR specifically for Asia-bound flights in economy. Do they usually just eyeball it, or should I expect a full weigh-in of cabin bags?
Would rather not repack at the counter if I can avoid it 😅
