Looking for advice on transitioning into the data center industry

I’m exploring the data center industry and would really appreciate advice on the best entry point based on my background.

I started my career about 20 years ago as a system administrator, with hands-on experience in hardware, networking, and technical support. My career later evolved across software development, service delivery, program management and large-scale execution.

At the same time, I’ve stayed close to real-world technical work through facilities management, have some construction experience outside the U.S., and hands-on work in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and appliance repair.

I know I may be coming from a nontraditional angle for some roles, but I’m serious about the transition, quick to learn, and open to starting where it makes sense. I’m currently based in Southern California, but open to relocation.

For people already working in data centers or critical facilities: which roles would be the strongest fit for someone with this kind of background?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
