Italian fan here! How accurate is Melissa’s Italian-American representation?

I’m a fan of Abbott Elementary and I really love Melissa as a character, but watching the show from Italy, I couldn't help but notice how heavily her character relies on classic Italian-American tropes: the vague "neighborhood connections," the obsession with food, the intense family dynamics, and family members who feel straight out of a classic gangster movie (especially in the Christmas episodes).

To me these depictions can sometimes feel a bit like a caricature, but I also know that Italian-American culture is its own distinct thing, separate from modern Italian culture, and I also know this is a comedy, so characters are naturally exaggerated for laughs and aren't meant to be perfectly realistic

BUT, since I'm not very familiar with the reality of Italian-American communities today (like in South Philly), I wanted to ask your opinion!

Is Melissa’s character grounded in reality for that specific culture, or is it just highly exaggerated for comedy?
