Airstream GTX 24: Overpriced, Underbuilt – My Honest Review After Day 2 Ownership
Airstream’s reputation for premium quality no longer matches reality. They’re charging luxury prices while delivering average (or below-average) construction that relies heavily on the brand name. If you’re considering a GTX 24 or any new Airstream, here’s my unfiltered experience.
Major Issues I Found Immediately
- Wiring: Still using residential-style wiring instead of proper stranded, NEC-compliant, or marine-grade wire. The looms were a mess — shoved under cabinets and benches with zero cleanup. Mine was rubbing on a couch actuator, with excessive length that wasn’t cut to size or properly secured. This is a clear fire hazard and long-term headache.
- Cabinets & Drawers: Cheap materials, poor assembly, weak hardware, undersized screws, and minimal fasteners. On day two of ownership (less than 10 miles from the dealer, drawers still latched and empty), multiple drawers fell out while driving to get the windows tinted. Inspection showed split wood, pulled screws, and broken/loose hardware. I spent half a day replacing screws, reinforcing everything, and re-gluing split cabinets. Nearly all drawers were affected.
- Electronics: Decent components but poorly integrated — multiple different brands requiring five separate apps just to monitor and control systems. Continuity and ease of use are nonexistent.
Customer Service Experience
After fixing the cabinet failures myself, I contacted Airstream. Their response? They’d reimburse materials only — not my labor. They suggested returning it to a dealer or driving it across the country to the factory. At that point the van was already showing it couldn’t reliably make it around town. I offered a very reasonable $150/hr for 6 hours of my time (well below PNW rates), and they declined.
Bottom Line
Don’t waste your money on a new Airstream. The brand is coasting on its name while quality has slipped to match (or fall below) other manufacturers. You’re better off buying a “lesser” brand for half the price with equal or better real-world quality, or going fully custom.
For reference, our previous Thor Sprinter van (half the cost) crossed the country multiple times, including off-road, with zero cabinet failures or major issues.
Save yourself the frustration and the $$. Do your research and consider alternatives.
