Am i naive to think i can find affordable rent in my situation?
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to realistically understand my chances of finding a cheap but acceptable WG room in Berlin as a newcomer, and I would really appreciate honest advice from people who know the housing situation there.
My situation:
- Non-EU foreign-trained medical professional
- Moving to Berlin to pursue Approbation + medical language exams
- Enrolled in a private language school for 6 months initially
- I will have a blocked bank account with around €1100/month available
- German level currently A2 (improving)
- Certified C1 English
- No German job contract yet because I’ll focus first on exams/language
- foreign sounding name but not something alarming
My questions are:
- Will I be at a major disadvantage when applying for cheaper WG rooms because:
- I’m not employed yet,
- I’m attending a private language school instead of a university,
- and my income source is basically a blocked account?
- Is it realistic to start applying for WG rooms before arriving in Berlin, or do most landlords/WG tenants ignore applicants who are still abroad?
- Would I have any realistic chance of getting student-type accommodation (private or public) with only a language school enrollment? Or are those mostly restricted to university students?
- Can language students usually get 1-year accommodation contracts, or are shorter stays more common?
- Overall, is finding a cheap WG room in Berlin on this budget still feasible in 2026, assuming I’m okay with modest conditions and possibly outer districts?
- What should i expect to pay as cheap but convenient rent ( as exemple i dont want a shared room in a 7 room appartment type of thing)
- As i'm okay with commuting is there a specific place or region in berlin i should look into specifically to find suitable possibilities?
I’m really not expecting luxury — just something safe, legal, and reasonably connected by public transport.
Any advice about what landlords/WGs care about most in my situation would also help a lot.
Thanks!
