Advice needed for new candle maker- Gel Candles
Hello everyone!
I recently decided I would like to start making candles as a hobby and potentially a small business.
I bought some medium density gel wax from Michael’s and some dye and fragrance from hobby lobby, and I believe a beeswax wick from hobby lobby.
I already made one candle, and with short times of burning it, i am not noticing much issue, but I have read many-a horror stories about gel candles.
I read that you need specific fragrance, and i saw some on candlesandsupplies.com that say they are gel safe, and I may move forward with that.
Mostly, I want to know the steps I should be taking to ensure my candles are safe to burn. I really like the look of gel candles, especially because they give a beverage vibe, which is what I’m wanting for my candles.
The jar I’m using for my candle right now is a thick, dishwasher safe cup (glass, obviously) from Dollar Tree.
I’m feeling nervous because I don’t want to make anyone’s house explode. So please let me know any info I should keep in mind going forward.
Also!!! I googled it, but I want to be sure: is it okay to layer different types of wax? Like using a gel wax and layering soy wax on the top, bottom, or both?
Thank you in advance for any tips or advice. I’m really excited but the thought of accidentally causing harm or a fire is putting a hold on my candle making at the moment. (:
edit; after looking at the comments and some photos of candles that are dyi, i think i will only use gel for “ice cubes” or a similar purpose going forward. it should help keep it from getting too complicated because they won’t need scent or color. thanks for all the advice!
