What happened to "Spotting your leave"

Maybe ten years or so ago, a lot of players were pointing with their cue to where they wanted to leave the cue ball. Seemed it was a part of their pre shot routine and to be honest I thought maybe they did that so when they watched/Reviewed their play tapes they could remember what they were trying to do. I don't see it anymore and was wondering if anyone knew why.

I have picked up the practice and think its helpful. Just seems it was fairly popular for pro's a while back and not anymore.
