I ended up getting the abg cream compounded again, this time in Vaseline. It can definitely sort of sting at first, but I've had way less painful sensations throughout the day lately. I wish I had focused on this cream more at first, rather than doing oral gabapentin for a month. But live and learn. It's very true when people have said on this sub that you have to see that will work for you, which can really be tedious but also expensive...
