I would like to share my TCF results after 12 months of self-studying French. First of all, I would like to say that I owe this to this subreddit (you guys have inspired me to start this journey!!). Seeing people reach B2 level in just a few months made me believe that this was possible. Long story short, I haven't received the scores I need for Canada, but I would like to show you that a journey toward mastering French can take a different form: slower, sometimes irregular, but just as rewarding!

Last year was the first time I realized (thanks to this subreddit) that it is possible to learn a new language from 0 (I had no prior exposure to French before). I am happy with the progress I have made over the course of the year and will work to improve my french over the next few months to get the B2 that I need.

Here is the breakdown of my scores:

• Speaking: This was my first exam, and I found it very intimidating because I hadn't had a lot of opportunities to practice speaking French (I do not live in a Francophone country and have mainly been using the Discord french server + my 2x a week Preply tutor lessons to practice speaking french). At the end of task 3, I did not have enough time to finish my answer and ended up rambling (did not even conclude my argument and the proctor had to cut me off lmao). My score: 9/20 (B1). I'm quite happy with this because I am one point short from a B2!!
• Listening Comprehension: This is my worst section in my practice exams. So you can probably imagine that I was shocked to learn that I got a pretty decent score for this section (even though it is still not enough for Canada). My score: 439/699 (B2).
• Reading comprehension: I was not too worried about this section because I had done a lot of reading exercises and could easily reach C1 level in the mock exams. Reading is obviously muchhhh easier than listening. However, I was very disappointed with my final scores. I don’t know what happened, but I guess I must have been very tired during the exam and was unable to concentrate that much (this was also my second-last section). My score: 398 (B1).
• Writing: This was my last exam, and as you can imagine, at this point, testing fatigue had gotten to me. I was surprised to learn that this was my best section out of the rest. I did not even have enough time to finish task 3 because, unfortunately, I did not manage my time well (in fact, I did not even reach the minimum word count and I thought TCF would not grade my test and I would automatically receive an A1). My score: 12/20 (B2).

My final score is: B1. Not bad for 12 months of on-and-off studying. I plan to retake the exam in the summer. If you have any advice for me, please feel free to share it in the comments!! Thank you for inspiring me on this journey, and I hope this post will also inspire others who are wondering whether learning french is the right approach for their immigration goals.

Cette fois-ci, même si je n’ai pas obtenu les résultats dont j’ai besoin pour l’immigration canadienne, je pense avoir fait beaucoup de progrès en français, surtout si l’on prend en compte le fait que je me suis lancée dans cet apprentissage pendant une année de travail très chargée.

• L'expression orale: c’était ma première épreuve et je l’ai trouvée plutôt difficile, car j’ai eu l’impression de ne pas avoir eu beaucoup d’occasions de pratiquer ou d’améliorer ma capacité à le faire. À la fin de la tâche 3, je n’ai pas eu assez de temps pour finir ma réponse. Du coup, j’ai l’impression d’avoir divagué pendant l’examen. Ma note : 9/20 (B1).
• Compréhension orale: cette épreuve reste, selon moi, la section la plus inquiétante. Cependant, j’ai été choquée d’apprendre que j’avais atteint le niveau B2 (même si ce n’est pas toujours suffisant pour le Canada). Ma note : 439/699 (B2).
• Compréhension écrite: je n’étais pas trop nerveuse pour cette épreuve, car j’avais fait beaucoup d’exercices et je pouvais facilement atteindre le niveau C1. Je pense qu’il est plus facile de lire que d’écouter. Toutefois, j’ai été très déçue lorsque j’ai obtenu ma note. Je ne sais pas ce qui s’est passé, mais je suppose que j’ai dû être très fatiguée pendant l’examen et que je n’ai pas réussi à me concentrer. Ma note : 398/699 (B1).
• L'expression écrite: c’était ma dernière épreuve et, comme vous pouvez l’imaginer, à ce moment-là j’étais très épuisée. J’ai été surprise d’apprendre que c’était ma meilleure épreuve. Je n’ai pas eu le temps de finir la tâche 3 parce que, malheureusement, j’ai mal géré mon temps (en fait, je ne suis même pas arrivée à atteindre le nombre minimum de mots et je pensais que j’aurais obtenu la pire note, A1, à cause de cela). Ma note : 12/20 (B2).

Voici ma note finale : B1. Pas mal pour 12 mois. Je prévois de repasser l’examen pendant l’été. Si vous avez des conseils pour moi, n’hésitez pas à les partager dans les commentaires, s’il vous plaît. I’m looking for recommendations for French news websites similar to the New York Times (something that covers politics, international news, culture, and especially opinion/analysis pieces).

Ideally:

• Free (or at least partially free)
• Good for regular reading practice
• Includes essays, opinion articles, or long-form content

For me it's:

- Making a new TikTok account where i was able to reset the algorithm so that it only feeds me french content (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

- Watching movies in french without the subtitles (which forces me to actively listen)

- Forcing myself to read a free article a day on France24

- Falling asleep at night with the french news on TV
