Why Season 2?

Now that we have seen the whole plot arc of the series.. what was the point of Season 2? We were told by you know whom that the second season would set the stage for the plot of the last season, to get every character where they need to be.

I know of course that we got the shortened finale-problem.. but nonetheless.. the themes and characters are still the same. And i am confused. When the ending was set the whole time.. then why write Nina and Maggie? Why write all the people on Whickber Street? Why write the Final Fifteen with that disastrous kiss? It doesn‘t make any sense, because all those humans are dead now and there was never a plan to let A&C reconcile in their universe. Why let Gabriel & Beelzebub come together in an act of free will? Why have 3 minisodes that examine free will and the greyness and coming together of opposites, when there was never a plan, that this coming together was even possible? Why not write about the themes that were suddenly important in the decision at the end of the finale and set those up properly?

I don‘t understand how Season 2 was necessary for Season 3? (Except in giving us the excellent An Companion to Owls, of course ;-) ) The answer could of course be: Money. Or is there a more satisfactory answer? What do you think about this?
