Star Health reduced ₹49k from major laparoscopic surgery claim citing “maximum payable” — worth appealing or go for secondary insurance?
Need advice regarding Star Health insurance claim deductions after major laparoscopic surgery.
My mother (44 years old) underwent major laparoscopic surgery for severe endometriosis-related condition at a network hospital in Tamil Nadu. Surgery included hysterectomy and related procedures. The hospitalisation was cashless under Star Health Family Health Optima policy.
Final hospital bill:
₹2,15,435
Amount approved by Star Health:
₹1,66,214
Non-payable amount:
₹49,221
Breakup of deductions:
- OT Charges reduced by ₹15,000 stating “maximum payable”
- Consultation/visit charges reduced by ₹18,000 stating “maximum payable”
- Medicines/consumables ₹12,111 rejected (gloves, wipes, uro bag, masks, disposables, etc.)
- Extra diet charges ₹3,380 rejected
- Blood grouping/HIV/HBsAg ₹730 rejected
Important points:
- No co-pay applied
- No room rent restriction
- No sub-limit issue
- Surgery itself was approved as medically necessary
- Cashless claim was approved successfully
- Policy is active and continuous for several years
The settlement letter also says:
“Maximum paid & further enhancement is not possible.”
What I’m trying to understand:
- Is it normal for insurers to apply internal package caps like this even when policy wording broadly covers OT charges, surgeon fees, consultation, etc.?
- Has anyone successfully appealed “maximum payable” deductions with Star Health?
- Are OT and consultation package caps negotiable through hospital insurance desk escalation?
- Is it worth pursuing reconsideration, or should I directly go for balance claim through secondary insurance (New India Assurance)?
- For people who did secondary claims after primary insurer settlement, how much usually gets reimbursed?
Not trying to accuse the insurer — just trying to understand whether these deductions are standard industry practice or if reconsideration is realistically possible.
Would appreciate advice from anyone who dealt with similar Star Health settlement deductions.
