Hey guys,

I need some advice on timing for a COS from J-1 (au pair) to F-1.

My program ends early Aug 2026, and I’m aiming to start school in Fall 2026. I’m planning to submit my COS application around late May or early June as that’s when I’d probably receive my i20.

I know the general advice is to apply 4–5 months in advance, but I’m worried about:
- USCIS processing delays
- What happens if my COS isn’t approved before the semester starts (end of Aug)
- Do I have to return home after my program date ends?

Has anyone here applied around 2–3 months before their program end date and still been okay?

Did you have to defer your semester, or were you able to start on time?

Any real experiences or timelines would really help 🙏
