Tesla Y camper from campeasy review
My husband and I did a 12 days ring road trip camping in a Tesla Y camper from campeasy and I want to share my experience.
This is our first time driving Tesla and so it took us a few hours to get used to the hundreds of options but otherwise it was a smooth ride.
First the positives:
Spacious - I was very worried if we will have enough space for all our belongings but Tesla Y camper is spacious. We stored all the food items in the bonnet storage, rear storage was good for all the utensils and our luggage we stored in the car bench seat and the foot space. Campeasy allowed us to storage our trolleys in their facility so we packed our belongings into smaller gym bags. I would suggest anyone planning to camp in Tesla to do the same.
Transportation cost - To saved a ton of money since fuel prices in Iceland are very expensive.
Bed - Turning on the camp mode, the front seats automatically moves forward and then we have a long bed were we can sleep comfortably
Negatives:
Mileage - I felt the power was training quicker than I expected. I think this could be because of renting and battery life. We had to charge 2 twice most days. In camp mode, battery drained 10 -15%.
Charging stations - Though there are number of charging stations as per map they all don’t work. Firstly it’s a bit chaotic as we need to register with multiple apps. At many stations especially N1 stations, the app didn’t recognise the QR codes or payment authorising was not working. Some station especially in small villages didn’t have the plugs and the plugs provided by CampEasy didn’t work. We had better luck with Tesla superchargers and eOne. Also many campsite didn’t allow charging electric car so please check with the campsite. The campsites that allowed charging had an app based payment for the KW consumed and rates were much cheaper than charging stations.
No space for cooking - This is our first trip to Iceland and we assumed all the camp sites will have a kitchen but they didn’t. It was a real pain to cook in some campsites where there was no benches even. We were lunch that the 2 days when it rained we were able to find a campsite with kitchen.
No good for rain - One day when we were in the west near Ólafsvík there were heavy rains and strong winds. We had no option but to get wet in the rain to make the bed.
No proper Tesla onboarding video was given by CampEasy. Though I highly rate the car and the service provided by CampEasy, it would have been better if they had some videos regarding Tesla camper example how to install the blackout, about charging stations and various other options in the touchscreen etc. The day we rented the camper it was extremely winding and we wouldn’t many back and forth between the car and the office so we drove away after transferring the luggage but later we had some difficulty getting around everything. For charging with Tesla supercharging station, Iceland address is required and we provided campEasy’s office address. I wished CampEasy informed this in advance
Final word - Good for short camping and if you are sticking to simple cooking. Also plan in advance for charging and ensure to install at least 2-3 charging app
