Is it normal for budgies to bite each other’s toes?
Back story, I have 2 budgies, a male named Pistachio (the green budgie, around 1 year old) and a female named Sesame (the blue one, around 7 months). Their ages are approximated cuz their past owner didn’t know their actual ages. Kinda sus but ok. I adopted them 2 months ago from an owner who was going to college and couldn’t take care of them anymore.
When they first came they were in this VERY tiny blue cage and I upgraded it since then. They’ve been together from the start and they play together and make happy noises sometimes. They’re also getting used to me. A week ago Sesame literally flew to me without me calling her.
I keep the cage open all day and only close it at night. They get 11 hours of sleep everyday at the exact same time. Recently tho I noticed Pistachio trying to step on her?? And one time I saw him stepping on her tail, grabbing the end of it with his tiny toes and biting it. She looked annoyed and then they started fighting and biting each others toes.
Tbf sometimes Sesame starts the fights too. She’s kinda territorial and always gets the toys first and makes sure Pistachio can’t get them. But at the same time when they’re outside the cage she follows him EVERYWHERE so I’m genuinely confused about their relationship.
Their room is huge and empty when they fly. There’s this crease near the top of the wall and they love sitting there and flying from one crease to another, sometimes to the floor too.
Can someone help me understand their behavior and maybe confirm their genders and age? I’m worried Pistachio is trying to mate with her. Do I need to seperate them? Any advice is appreciated tysm is advance.
I included a photo I took of them in a calm loving state
