Career - Excited But Worried About a Role I interviewed For?
I just finished my final interview for an office role a known economic consulting firm (SF office). The interview went very well — small office, supportive manager, hybrid schedule, and the work feels like a strong fit for my skills.
But I’m starting to worry about the long‑term stability of facilities/office operations roles in general, especially in San Francisco.
- Hybrid work means fewer people in the office
- Some companies are downsizing or giving up space
- AI is starting to automate certain admin/support tasks
- Tech layoffs have made me more cautious overall
I read that economic consulting firms are pretty stable because of their niche services. But, I’m still unsure how roles like this will evolve as offices shrink and AI adoption grows.
For anyone in workplace operations, consulting, or facilities:
- Are roles like this still considered essential in hybrid environments?
- How are firms thinking about office space long‑term?
- Is AI likely to impact facilities roles, or are they relatively safe?
Would appreciate any perspective. I really like the role — just trying to think realistically about the future.
