Need Career Advice – Transitioning Back to Civil Engineering After 4 Years in Game Art

Hi everyone, I completed my Civil Engineering degree in 2018 but later followed my passion for art and moved into the gaming industry. I worked for around 4 years as a Game Artist, mainly focusing on 3D workflows, visualization, and digital production pipelines.

While I gained valuable experience creatively and technically, the gaming industry has become quite unstable for me personally, and after facing job loss twice, I’ve decided to prioritize long-term career stability and family responsibilities.

Now, I’m planning to transition back into the civil engineering field, especially toward design-oriented roles like CADD Design, Revit Modeling and Structural Design. I already have certifications in AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, and Revit 3D (completed in 2019), along with a decent understanding of structural concepts.

I’d really appreciate advice from professionals in the industry:

  • Is this transition realistically possible after this gap?
  • Which roles would be best to target in 2026?
  • What skills/certifications should I focus on to become job-ready again?
  • Would BIM/Structural BIM be the right path for someone with my background?

Any guidance or roadmap suggestions would genuinely help me a lot. Thank you.
