The job market...
Hi everybody,
I just wanted to write about my personal experience in China for the past year, because on other threads I've seen people say things like "get a real job in the first place" (mentioning ESL teaching, which is by far the main type of job a foreigner can get in China, we all know that).
So I wanted to bring my own testimony about that. I'm basically a world-class expert in my field (customs and EU regulations), and back home I literally had to make a public announcement on LinkedIn asking people to stop offering me jobs (that's how high the demand is for people like me in Europe).
Now, given how critical my field is for Chinese companies and China in general (the US is closing itself, which means China now relies heavily on exports to Europe), a lot of companies should be begging me to work for them. Still, after one year trying, not a single company was interested.
The other day, someone I know from a Chinese company asked me a question about VAT regulations (because of course they don't even know the basics of the basics of how to do anything in the EU, how to set up any kind of business or anything else), just to get the knowledge for free without having to hire me (I don't fall for it anymore).
So yeah, that's just how bad the job market is right now in China, especially for foreigners.
My case is a bit special (Chinese wife, strong ties with China, don't want to live in any other country atm), but if you don't have any particular business in China, my advice is: come for tourism, not for work.
EDIT: alright, apparently a lot of the hate I get is because my post is kinda "goofy". Not a native speaker here! I didn't realize my post would sound so negative. If you knew me, you would know I love China and Chinese people (I'm very close to many Chinese people). I guess my point was misunderstood.
