Scan rough stones into 3D models with RealityScan (for rough planning)

hi all,

I'm playing with a couple free mobile apps to scan rough stones into 3D models. This video shows the real roughs and the results by RealityScan.

It's descent and with more photos, the accuracy can be improved. I've also tried Kiri engine and Scaniverse, the results will be posted later.

I wonder if anyone else have done these before, and maybe share some experience?

[Edits] Here's the results with Scaniverse and Kiri Engine. Scaniverse does everything on the phone, RealityScan and Kiri Engine require to upload the photos and the calculation is done on the server. Personally I prefer RealityScan and Kiri. More comparison will come later

Fantasy cut without the machine

I've been working on fantasy cut in GemSim recently and finally get it to a usable state. I don't have a fantasy machine and never done fantasy cut myself. So anyone with experience please give it a try and let me know if there's any issues. Thanks a lot!

Why polishing is not working on this stone?

I have been using the same thing for polishing, and it has worked well... till this stone (the last one in the video). Can anyone tell what stone is this and what I should use to polish it?

ChatGPT app is leaking like hell

I went out for lunch and came back saw this, ChatGPT app is using more memory than all other apps combined, by a lot! I heard that it's built on Electron? So I was expecting it to have a bigger memory footprint, but never this big :(

Share designs online with copyright protection

Hi,

I recently added cloud storage and sharing to GemSim. Cloud features are completely optional—all existing offline features still work without an account.

I hope this improve the file sharing experience while give the owner full control for copyright protection. The main idea is inspired by web-based CAD software - OnShape.

Feedback is very welcome, here's a 3 min walk through video: https://youtu.be/cmYIe85HutI

Cutting assistant feature, i.e., simulation for GemSim

I've added the simulation into GemSim. To me it's not an essential feature, but fun to watch and implement. The 3D models are not up to scale, it's purely for visualization.

GemSim update

hi all,

I've updated GemSim based on feedbacks received in my last post.

The tier table is easier to edit now. The edit windows for creating indices, angle and depth are updated as well.

Defining depth by selecting a meeting point is supported (set input mode to "point"), "edge" mode allows you to define a point on an edge to specify the depth. For angle and depth editing, granularity determines the step size of the sliders.

Finally, the pdf printout follows GCS format now.

I understand that copyright is a big concern. I've added the design title and author (if available) on the viewport, but not sure if that's enough. This databased is passed down to me from Robert, which AFAIK is released to the public and had been available in several other website for a long time.

There are over 5k designs, among them over 2k with asc files. It would be impossible to ask for permissions from all the authors. If you have any suggestions, please let me know (or file a bug with GemSim :). Thanks.

Preview for GemSim update

RFC: A new gem design software - GemSim

hi friends,

With the help of Robert Strickland (author of GemCAD) and several other contributors, GemSim is now available for free. It's a web app runs in browsers, so it works on any desktop, laptop, smart phones, tablets etc.

A quick start video is attached here. The goal is to make gemstone design and visualization more accessible, whether you’re learning faceting, experimenting with new designs, or simply exploring published diagrams in 3D.

I’d really appreciate any feedback. If you run into bugs, have workflow suggestions, or there’s a feature you’d like to see, please let me know. I’ll continue prioritizing new features based on community feedback.
