How have you been discovering music recently?

I feel like the way people discover music has changed a lot over the last few years.

For me it used to be:

  • friends sharing songs
  • random profiles/playlists online
  • forums
  • YouTube rabbit holes

Now it feels mostly like:

  • TikTok clips
  • algorithm playlists
  • Spotify recommendations

Not necessarily worse, just different.

I’m curious what’s actually working for people now though.

Where are you finding your favorite new music lately?

  • friends?
  • TikTok?
  • Reddit?
  • playlists?
  • concerts?
  • algorithms?
  • somewhere else?

And do you think music discovery feels less social now than it used to?

I felt like music streaming apps weren't social enough, so I built a music app catered to social features

One thing I always felt was missing from streaming apps was the social side of music.

You can see what people watch on Letterboxd, what people play on gaming platforms, what people post on social media, but music discovery still feels weirdly isolated.

So over the last couple years I started building a side project focused on discovering music through friends instead of just algorithms.

Some things I’ve been experimenting with:

  • Being able to display your favorite songs/artists
  • music taste profiles
  • Spotify Wrapped-style sharing cards
  • finding users with similar taste
  • social music discovery feeds
  • Interaction with others through music

Still super early, but it’s been interesting seeing how many people miss the older “social internet” feeling around music.

Would genuinely love feedback:
What features would actually make a music-focused social app useful to you instead of just “another social platform”?

Anyone else using the Solance App? If so follow me :)

Hey guys,

If anyone here is using Solance go and follow me my username is dan. I want to find new music, any and all kinds! If you don't have an account just make one and follow me anyway :D I love connecting with others through music and I find this app to be really good (I've mainly tried with my friends and so far I'm loving it)

Trying to get a discussion going on different music apps (any kind e.g. for streaming, discovering, sharing etc.) and what people like and don't like about them. I've created a music app and I'm looking for features people would want, and not necessarily want. Any points are valid!

Me and my best friend built a music app called Solance that we launched around 1.5 years ago. The app is similar to an app called airbuds (if anyone knows it) and you can follow your friends, or find other people will similar music taste, and see the music they listen to, and interact in a social way such as liking and commenting on songs. You can also play previews and save songs directly to Spotify.

We haven't done much paid advertising and the little we have done hasn't converted to many new users. I was hoping I could get some people to try out the app and provide feedback :) (feedback on the website would be great too it's solance.app).
