Info on keeping a hermanns tortoise (UK) - best enclosure etc please
Hi all
We are researching about owning a hermanns tortoise before making a commitment but I'm finding a bit of a mix of opinions and advice - can anyone weigh in please?
For context we live in the UK - space indoors and would want to have an outdoor enclosure for if it is ever sunny/dry enough for it too.
When researching I've found some people say you should have a vivarium whilst I see a lot of tortoise tables or similar. Is this dependant on age? Do we need a vivarium if getting a young tort and then when they are older and larger we swap over to a diy enclosure?
Seen some nice corner or l shaped designs - can they manage this OK or ought it be rectangle? With grass enclosure do they need it completely flat or can they take a slope outdoors?
The other thing I wanted to ask was about hibernation - again reading some do and some don't.. Can anyone shed light? this would not be for breeding or anything, I guess we are concerned about hibernation and the problems that can occur. Is it very hard to maintain warmth to prevent hibernation?
Any other tips or advice greatly appreciated, we want to be as informed as possible before making the commitment :)
Thanks!!
