Considering starting own firm
I’m a PE with about 8 YOE and I’ve hit the inevitable point in my career where I’ve realized I do not want to wake up and go to work for someone else every day.
There seems to be a big supply/demand problem in my area for structural engineers focused on residential design and inspection.
For those that have made the jump and started their own firm, has it been worth it?
Is your stress level/work life balance better or worse?
Are you making more than you were at your W-2?
If you’re doing residential, how did you learn it? I have 0 residential experience at the moment. Ideally I’d find a mentor someone in the next city over type of thing to teach me the ropes and consult when needed.
Any honest takes/experience would be much appreciated. Thank you!
