Would you read this?

This is a relatively early draft, and I'm mainly interested in feedback on the prose, atmosphere, and whether the scene creates enough intrigue to make you want to keep reading.

Any criticism is welcome. I changed 4 characters original names into some convenient name, so it will not create problem into reading actual texts here.

The story is set in Late Bronze Age India. And I need constructive criticism like line edits, story structure, ideas etc.

# Glossary

**Devas** — Deities; benevolent divine beings in Hindu cosmology. Sarojit's gratitude toward "the Devas" for a mild rainy season reflects everyday folk piety rather than formal theology.

**lungi** — A wrapped garment worn around the lower body, common daily wear for men across South and Southeast Asia, especially among laborers and fishermen.

**Ashvin** — Likely referring to the Ashvins (Ashvini Kumaras), twin Vedic gods associated with healing, medicine, and rescue — fitting given Sarojit invokes "the god Ashvin" while wishing for help with his aching legs, and the scene's larger theme of rescue from water. Worth confirming this is the deity you intend, since the Ashvins are traditionally a pair, not a single god — you may want "Ashvins" or to name one twin specifically (Nasatya or Dasra) if precision matters here.

**goddess of the river** — Unnamed in this draft; a river deity Sarojit prays to and credits for stilling the water. Could remain unnamed as folk-devotional address, or could later connect to a named deity if this ties into the larger Sahasra Vira Gatha cosmology (e.g., a Sindhu-adjacent river goddess).

**Munni** — Sarojit's daughter, referenced only once, addressed directly and never physically present in the scene.

**village chief** — Local authority figure, referenced through memory (his son's drowning) rather than appearing directly.

**cast net** — A circular fishing net thrown by hand so it spreads out over the water and sinks, trapping fish beneath it as it's drawn back in; the central tool and image of the story.
