Scribus… veni, vidi, wtf

I wanted to give Scribus a real try. I’m genuinely supportive of open-source software and I have a lot of respect for the community that builds and maintains projects like this.

That said, after spending some time with it, I found the user experience surprisingly frustrating. When I have to search the internet just to figure out how to find or import a simple color palette, I feel like something is off.

I understand that professional software can be powerful, complex, and geared toward advanced users. But basic tasks should be intuitive, or at least easy to discover within the interface. We’re not in the MS-DOS era anymore.

This isn’t a criticism of the contributors, whose work I appreciate. It’s simply feedback from a new user trying to adopt the software. In the end, software isn’t judged only by what it can do, but also by how much effort it takes to learn and use its core features.

Am I the only one who feels that Scribus puts too much burden on the user for relatively simple tasks?

macbook pro 2016 several issues

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this has already been asked before, but I couldn't find anything that really matches the issues I'm experiencing.

Here are my system details:

  • MacBook Pro 13" 2016 (MacBookPro13,2)
  • Intel Core i7-6567U
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Intel Iris Graphics 550
  • 251 GB SSD
  • Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  • GNOME 50
  • Wayland
  • Linux kernel 7.0.0-22-generic

I'm experiencing several issues:

  • The keyboard behaves strangely: while typing, letters sometimes disappear, words get deleted, and the cursor randomly jumps to another position in the text.
  • Sometimes while typing, entire words get overwritten or the cursor suddenly jumps to the beginning of a word or sentence.
  • The trackpad appears to work normally, but I have the impression that even lightly touching it can trigger unwanted actions and interfere with typing.
  • Wi-Fi performance is extremely poor and unstable.

I'm trying to understand whether this is:

  1. A hardware issue (keyboard, trackpad, battery, etc.).
  2. A Linux driver/kernel issue.
  3. A known compatibility problem with this MacBook model.

Has anyone experienced similar issues on a 2016 MacBook Pro running Linux?

Also, which Linux distribution and version would you currently recommend for the best stability and hardware support on this machine? Ubuntu, Fedora, Linux Mint, something else?

Any feedback, troubleshooting tips, or distribution recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

BlenderGIS + QGIS workflow for city environments?

Hey,

I’m losing my mind a bit with BlenderGIS / QGIS and I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

What I’m trying to achieve is pretty simple in theory:
> real terrain
> real satellite imagery
>real buildings
> then use Blender for cinematic urban renders/animations

The terrain part finally works. I can get ESRI (google also) aerial + elevation and generate the relief correctly in Blender.

But the moment I try to import OSM buildings through BlenderGIS, it constantly breaks:
>403
>406
>timeout
>“server load too high”

So I switched to QGIS + QuickOSM, exported buildings as SHP and imported them into Blender.

It works… but very demanding for the workflow.
But now I’m fighting:

>CRS confusion (2056 / 3857 / Web Mercator)
>weird scaling/alignment
>messy extrusion workflow
>imports that feel fragile and inconsistent

At this point I’m mostly trying to understand:
what is the ACTUAL modern workflow people use today for serious city/terrain visualization in Blender?

Do ppl still use BlenderGIS seriously?
Or is there an alternative that i missed?

I’m not doing GIS analysis. I’m trying to create cinematic scenes and realistic terrain-based environments.

Would really appreciate hearing how experienced people structure their pipeline.

ps: i copy/paset my tread in blender too.
