My Grandpa: WW2 Purple Heart Recipient
My grandpa was a WW2 veteran, who fought in many countries on the Western Front, eventually earning a Purple Heart. Interestingly, his oldest brother was a WW1 veteran with his own children when my grandpa was born.
Despite his distinguished service, he never spoke about it or the war. In 1991, when I was 6, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He deteriorated rapidly becoming nonverbal within two years of diagnosis. I never really knew him, but from all accounts, he was a gentle man who loved people and an insanely-skilled carpenter.
Today, I honor him
