What we thought was a hematoma turned out to be so much more...
So i had my vasectomy a month ago. Other than the doc not being able to find my one vas deference easily, and having some surprise shooting pain (thanks redhead gene) everything seemed good. 72hours later, i accidentally balltap myself while driving and the right one swells to 2.5x the size of my left one. Wrootch around while making a turn, wrist meet ball. Saw the urologist again just to make sure i didnt do major damage, what to look out for, blah blah blah and we go on our way.
Week 2: my right testicle is gets big and i notice some hard lumps. Not painful, but tolerable. Go to Urologist again in case this is a direct result of that bump but he says it's a hematoma and most likely unrelated but not to rule it out. It's around this time i start to have trouble keeping my body temp stable. I get reall chilly out of nowhere, warm up, then overheat, then cool off, repeat. Other than a light cough i have no fever and no other symptoms that could hint at it being something like an infection.
Week 3: see my family doc because the NSAID the urologist gave me is unsafe to take because of the nature of my work, gives me a different formulation and some tylenol eith codeine as well to help.
Week 4: This morning i wake up and there is a spot on my scrotum that is extremely sensitive and extremely painful. I liken it to carpet burn because it feels like a hot poker and ANY contact with that spot sets off this immense pain. I can tolerate it throughout the day, but it sucks. I get home and lay down and take some naps. My last nap, i laid down at 5pm ish and woke up at 5:45 with my alarm. I go to get up, feel my balls to see if that spot's still there, and to my horror my hand is cold and covered with brown liquid that soaked through my underwear. I rush to the shower and it turns out enough pressure built in my balls that it busted open my surgery scar. And what came out? A foul smelling mixture that was 50/50 blood and pus. I kid you not when i say it drained for almost a half hour with high enough pressure that i could get streams going.
Now, 3.5hrs later, the wound still wont close shut. On call Urologist said not to worry about it when i called them at 6, but now that it's still refusing to stop draining im getting frustrated and worried. That said, the ampunt coming out is SIGNIFICANTLY less and looks more like water than blood or anything else, so hopefully that means it's almost done and i can maybe try to sleep tonight
UPDATE: the wound has basically stopped draining now. Just some clear liquid very slowly seeping out.
Also, it was incorrect of me to say the "On Call" Urologist said "dont worry about it." More specifically, when i asked if i should go to the ER, they didnt think it was necessary because they'd probably just give me antibiotics and send me on my way, and they did immediately order antibiotics for me that i can pick up first thing in the morning. Im still dumbfounded how this didnt raise any red flags for me and 2 doctors, but here we are. I know it was basically impossible to tell if my balls were hot from infection because even when i felt it, both sides were about the same temp. And with everything being swollen from what is still probably a hematoma in there, it'd make sense things would be
UPDATE 2: went to the er since the wound refused to totally close. After a quick glance the er doctor called it out as an abcess. Waiting to be admitted, but having testing and imaging done. From the people ive talked to have said (since the er doc didnt even give me the time of day) where it was at, and how hard everything around was, it was just a very easy miss between the lack of obvious infection signs (like high fever, chills, etc) and that there was no signs of anything wrong beforehand so it just missed everyone's radars that ive seen in person. Who knows how long it've been stewing if it didnt burst because even the ER doc's assistant wasnt 100% confident they wouldve known without imaging
