Do you think it’s practical to early decision to UChicago?
Hi! I’m a white-Asian guy from the Chicago suburbs. I should not qualify/need for any sort of aid. I go to a very high achieving public school.
Weighted: 4.64
ACT: 35 (36 E 36 R 34 M 34 S)
Applying as: some sort of biological science
I wish I could send the scatterplot I have of accepted versus denied. It looks like 4.64 is definitely on the lower side of acceptances earl. I’m guessing a fair amount of the lower gpa applicants are professor nepo babies. There is a huge streak of people who got 34s with rejections ED ranging up to a 5.2…
I am a high-ish achieving wrestler/athlete. Every year I have received one concussion around the beginning of the second semester. Every year I think it has definitely contributed to my low GPA. After my third and most recent concussion a few months ago, the effects of what I know now is ADHD became exacerbated. I went through pretty much all of my grades portion of highschool with untreated adhd and head injury. After treatment, I now have straight A’s, which is a 5.16 for this semester (second of junior year).
Basically, I’m wondering if these circumstances could provide some leeway..
Junior year:
American Studies High Honors (mirrors APUSH
And Lang, I honestly took it to make sure I wouldn’t have the same English teacher as my sophomore year)
Honors PreCalculus
AP Biology
Top wind ensemble of my school (prestigious program)
Top jazz ensemble of my school (prestigious also)
APs and senior year:
Expecting a 5 on Biology
Expecting a 5 and possibly a 4 on AP Lang
Senior year:
AP Chem
AP Gov
AP Lit World Lit
AP Calc AB
The two music ensembles
If actually applying with music would be beneficial, I would be more than happy to do that.
Activities:
4 years varsity wrestling and 1 year captain
1 year/class of student athlete leadership training (4 hrs)
1 year Freshman 1 year JV 2 years varsity of cross country and track and field (these sports take about 20 hours a week, averaged from wrestling taking more running taking less)
4 years Lead Trumpet Player at a prestigious conservatory (10 hrs a week), a group that free-lances as semi-professional
2 years youth wrestling coach (4 hrs)
Practicing for both top ensembles I’ve been in for three years (freshman belong at a different campus at my school) (3 hours)
Studying abroad in London with Notre Dame receiving a college credit this summer
Awards:
Because of my various injuries (also including an ACL tear and skull fracture), I haven’t received any special awards for wrestling such as All State.
Sports has also prevented me from receiving all state honors in jazz or concert music
Both of these achievements I am very much capable of doing and will do (if wrestling doesn’t end early for me like usual)
I would probably write an essay (if it fits a prompt well) about my time freelancing in NOLA, and being able to play a set with trumpet player Kermit Ruffins.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and thank you so much!
