Debating between going back to PT school or continuing my PTA position
Hi everyone! I’m a 28F PTA in southern CA for 3 years now and have been debating on going back to PT school. I have already retaken bio and chem the last year and am going to start physics in the fall.
However I’ve been thinking about the ROI since it’s a big topic with PTs, and how I’m not sure if I want to be in 100k debt to be paid 100k.
Mind you I already have about 40k in undergrad loans and 20k left from my PTA program. I planned to have at least pay my PTA loan before going back to PT school. I know the answer sounds like a no brainer, but I know I’ll be in this field for another 30 years so why not go back into it?
I just am thinking about my future in a sense where I don’t know if I’ll be able to buy a home, if I plan to have children in the next 5 years, etc. so being maybe in 150k in debt will set me back? It’s not like other health care professionals where our cap is a lot higher.
If this helps anyone in terms of crunching in numbers, I’m very lucky to have an 80k salary as a PTA in OP as I live in Southern CA, the pay is higher.
Is it worth going back? I hear the burn out from new grad PTs is real and I don’t want to end up in a mill (been there done that).
