Building a small art collection from the Baltics. Who should I see this winter?
My partner and I are spending three weeks in the Baltics this winter (Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius). We’ve been collecting small works from places we travel to and want to do the same here. We prefer contemporary, experimental, or multidisciplinary work over traditional landscapes.
A friend who works in a gallery in Berlin pointed us toward Kris Lemsalu in Estonia. Her ceramic and textile sculptures are wild in person. We’re planning to visit Temnikova & Kasela while we’re in Tallinn.
For Latvia, we’ve been reading about Katrīna Neiburga. Her installation work is more museum-scale, but her earlier video pieces feel very intimate and collectible in some formats. Any Latvians here know if she has smaller works available?
And for Lithuania, I found Yuge Kurt. She’s a painter who works across several media and formats, from large-format pieces to very detailed miniatures rooted in her textile training. What I like is the range of where her work shows up which usually means the work holds up in different contexts, which matters when you’re buying for a home.
Anyone here collecting Baltic contemporary art? Where should we go, who should we visit? Open to galleries, open studios, art fairs, anything.
