I took metformin with my first pregnancy, no issues at all…

This time, I’ve been on the higher dose for a week and I am in gastrointestinal DISTRESS. I haven’t kept a meal inside for longer than an hour in 2 full days.

The nurse said to tough it out for 3 more days to see if it settles. If it doesn’t, she said it would be on to insulin.

I’ve read online that insulin causes weight gain. I was on a weight loss journey when I fell pregnant and I’m not keen on the idea of excess weight gain if it can be avoided.

Anyone with bad side effects from metformin- did they settle?
Also anyone on insulin find they gained weight?

I am currently 14+5 in my second pregnancy. My consultant did warn me it is likely to appear earlier and be more aggressive second time around, but I am concerned about the numbers I’m seeing.

She asked me to start testing 2 days a week to keep an eye. Yesterday was day 1.
I had a special occasion lunch at a restaurant with dessert…. My BSL after an hour was 10.9! I nearly fell off my seat. I thought it was maybe a one off because of the high carb/sugar meal.

Today I had a small portion of beans on toast for lunch, my level was 10.5.

During my entire first pregnancy I never had a reading that high. They were like around 8-9 before I started treatment then it was under control.

I am really concerned about these really high numbers so early on in my pregnancy. Has anyone experienced this before? Will they try to diet manage me when I call on Monday or will it be straight to medication?
I’m UK based and my fasting numbers were 5.1/5.2.

I should also note- I was definitely not type 2 before I was pregnant, I was tested.
