It turns out that aspirin can upregulate telomerase, just like what happens in other cell types capable of increasing bone formation. Basically, we speculate that this effect on BMMSCs is what triggers osteogenesis, suggesting that aspirin could be a potential treatment for osteoporosis (as seen in OVX mice). The good thing is that the elevated telomerase levels are much lower than those found in cancer cells, which implies that using aspirin to improve bone formation is safe.
